24 th September 2011 “LET’S DO IT” CAMPAIGN
24.09.2011

The Cooperation Project entitled “Biodiversity and Nature Protection – a responsible approach to environmental problems of two twin cities”, between Timisoara Municipality and the Town of Szeged, (acronym BIOTOWNS, project code HURO/0901/128/1.3.4., implemented within the frame of the Hungary – Romania Cross-Border Co-operation Programme 2007-2013, co-funded by the European Union and the European Regional Development Fund) together with the Project „Let’s Do It, Romania!” have united their forces in reaching a common target: performing ecology actions aimed at certain natural areas, and information actions with the aim of raising the awareness and the responsibilization of the citizens who throw waste materials in these areas illegally

The action took place at the Forest Screen of Timisoara Municipality which is situated outside of the built-up area of the city, between Ovidiu Balea Street and Calea Aradului as well as in their surroundings. The participants have been volunteers from the Environment Department of the Timisoara Municipality City Hall together with volunteers from the Timisoara Penitentiary, with a total number of 100 persons deprived of liberty and their accompanying guards.

The action took place on Saturday, 24 th September 2011, starting with 09:00 a.m. until 02:00p.m. within the perimeter of the forest screen from Calea Torontalului where illegal storages of domestic  and constructions wastes have been inventoried

Besides being an ecologization activity, it had also an educative value aiming at making the citizens more responsible with a view to the impact, which the breaking of the rules concerning the management of wastes has on the natural environment, flora and fauna, of the Timisoara Municipality.

In order to propagate the aims and results of this action through the media, the camera operators from Television of the Timisoara Penitentiary recorded images, interviews and opinions of the participants concerning what it represents the cleaning of public spaces, of natural areas, the protection and conservation of biodiversity. This material is to be broadcast through the closed circuit television of the Timisoara Penitentiary with education purposes.

Large quantities of wastes have been gathered: household (domestic) wastes, wastes from buildings and redecorations, used tyres from motorcars, bottles, pieces from car bodies, and other types of wastes. They were gathered in bags and sorted according to their type, and then they were loaded and transported for final storage by the salubrization company S.C. “RETIM Ecologic Service” S.A. Timişoara, which supported this event logistically.

The ecological campaign had outstanding results, all its objectives being attained: the ecologization of a particular natural area, information of the community, raising citizens’ awareness and their responsibilization in matters of breaking the rules concerning waste disposal in natural areas.
